Meet our Founders
Marilyn Congdon Nowell and Sadie Leder Elder
Co-Founders
Working Wardrobe emerged from the co-founders’ shared passion for community service and drive to empower women in the greater High Point community. The founders met through their mutual involvement in the Junior League of High Point, and it was through that platform that they gained a heightened awareness of the many challenges posed by poverty in the High Point community. From this service grew the desire to create Working Wardrobe with the hope of enriching the lives of women and children challenged by clothing insecurity.
Our Backstory
As members of the Junior League of High Point, our co-founders are proud of its legacy of community impact initiatives, which includes the JLHP’s Bargain Boutique. Decades ago, this important resource made quality second-hand clothing available to community members at deeply discounted prices. In the early 2000’s, through a collaboration between the Junior League of High Point and the High Point YWCA, the YWCA’s Women’s Resource Center was established. In 2008, the Women’s Resource Center grew to include a Career Closet. Clothes, like those that had once been available in the JLHP Bargain Boutique, were made available to women in need through the YWCA’s Career Closet. For nearly two decades, the YWCA’s Career Closet provided professional attire to women in High Point, which facilitated their entrance into and upward mobility within the work world. In time, the Career Closet was closed. A driving force behind the creation of Working Wardrobe was the desire to collaborate with other community resources available in the greater High Point community to help fulfill women’s longstanding need for professional attire. By providing needed clothing, we believe that Working Wardrobe will help our female community members find jobs, sustain employment, and advance professionally. This could, by extension propel local women and their families toward better lives filled with more economic independence, as well as improved mental and physical well-being.
