WELCOME  TO

WORKING  WARDROBE

Our mission is to provide clothing to women and children in the greater High Point community in an effort to help facilitate and enrich their lives.

Working Wardrobe is an organization committed to combating clothing insecurity by providing attire that will enable and inspire women and children to have more positive and productive lives. We aim to be a catalyst for positive community change by promoting the health and welfare of women and children.

What is Clothing Insecurity?

Clothing insecurity is the lack of access to affordable, adequate and appropriate clothing. Unfortunately, this is a plight that impacts both children and adults. A recent needs assessment found that 20% of High Point residents live in poverty. For these individuals little of their funds are available to spend on the luxury of clothing, particularly appropriate work and school attire.

For adults in our community, one of the most commonly requested items for “employment assistance” is work clothing and many people report that a lack of appropriate clothing has resulted in lost employment. A nation-wide study by CivicScience mirrored our local needs by finding that 41% of adults in the United States believe that they are at least somewhat in need of new clothes.

Children in Need

National data reveals that more than 20 million children in the United States are currently growing up without basic essentials, including clothing and shoes. Further, research has shown that more than 40% of American children are unable to adequately dress themselves each day. Indeed, it’s reported that “lack of clothing” accounts for a significant number of missed school days.

Impact of Clothing Insecurity

While we know that appropriate and adequate clothing are important for physical needs, like warmth and protection, people often forget how important clothes are in fulfilling our psychological and social needs. Research shows that lack of appropriate attire has been linked to emotional problems such as a lowered sense of self-worth and depression in both adults and children. Related to social needs, proper clothing allow individuals to make a positive first impression, thereby opening doors both personally and professionally.

Working Wardrobe helps women in the High Point community find jobs, sustain employment, and advance professionally.  We hope that by extension this will propel women and their families toward better lives filled with more economic independence, as well as improved mental and physical well-being.
